VISAGE - REVEALING THE SECRETS OF THE MIND

with MICHAEL ABRAHAMSON

9th -14th May

The Auto & General Theatre on the Square is proud to present a spellbinding theatrical experience with leading mentalist and memory expert, MICHAEL ABRAHAMSON. His production, VISAGE – Revealing the Secrets of the Mind, will be presented for one week only from the 9th May. Tickets for this “must see” experience are selling fast and there are only seats available for the performance on Friday 12th May at 20:15. Extra shows may be added.

VISAGE Revealing the Secrets of the Mind is a unique experience, based on some never-before-seen effects that develop and unravel throughout the show, building up to a memorable and astonishing climax. It is suitable for all ages and Michael Abrahamson demonstrates performance pieces that keep the audience enthralled throughout. It is also fully interactive, so the audience are totally involved in the process, both actively and passively. The show is directed by veteran director and producer, Richard H. Nosworthy.

As with Abrahamson’s previous two shows, VISAGE makes use of mathematics, memory skills, body language, psychology, eye movements in interactive fun ways that keep audiences spellbound throughout the performance. VISAGE – Revealing the Secrets of the Mind shows audiences what mentalism is really about. Abrahamson, formerly a magician, became fascinated with the arts when he was very young; at the age of six he assisted a magician at a cousin’s birthday party and became “hooked”. He then joined a magic school and learned magical secrets and began developing his own shows. He moved from magic to mentalism some ten years ago after he had seen a mentalism show presented by a visiting exponent of the art.

Says Abrahamson, “Mentalism uses the five senses to create an illusion of a sixth sense; It is effectively an art form that uses mathematics, memory skills, body language, eye movement, psychological suggestion and other skills in order to influence audience members into specific, but non-threatening and non-personal courses of action.”  This makes for very compelling entertainment.

Now this amazing mathematician and baffler of brains has pumped up the pizzazz to make his new show, Visage - Revealing the Secrets of the Mind, a little showier. He hasn’t resorted to gold shirts and sequined assistants, thank goodness, but he has lights and music, and a slicker feel thanks to director Richard Nosworthy“ Lesley Stones - Daily Maverick

Quotes from the Media

“The show, or perhaps more accurately Abrahamson’s skills, is utterly baffling and completely extraordinary “ - Genevieve Vieira – Citizen

“It’s a fascinating show for a thinking audience, and leaves you wondering if you’re neglecting the powers hidden within you, too. While his memory skills are impressive, far more intriguing is the mind reading. Visage is an entertaining exercise in mental prowess”

“‘If it was magic I’d understand,’ a man in front of me whispers. And that’s exactly it. Abrahamson isn’t using magic. There are no ‘smoke and mirrors’, rabbits stuffed into hats or people primed to give a certain answer. He uses his five senses to create a sixth sense, combining maths, memory, and watching for eye movements and body language to somehow influence people into specific courses of action.” - Lesley Stones – Daily Maverick / Artslink.co.za

“I go along simply to be amused and amazed. Abrahamson certainly achieves both objectives perfectly. Abrahamson’s wonderful memory techniques and mathematical skills genuinely amazed and thrilled me and I recommended his show without hesitation “

Michael Abrahamson is a versatile entertainer, comfortable in sports broadcasting, academic lecturing and in general dealings with people”- Moira de Swardt - ArtsComments

“He has been developing his mental and intuitive abilities for many years, resulting in what he terms “a highly developed sixth sense”. The sixth sense here refers not to a subtle perception of the supernatural realm such as ghosts and angels, but to a collective working of the other five senses that enhances extra-sensory perception and high-accuracy intuition.” - Genevieve Vieira - Citizen

On the brink of war in Europe, author and former atheist C.S. Lewis visits the London home of Dr. Sigmund Freud. Lewis’s recent embrace of Christianity stands in stark contrast to Dr. Freud, whose beliefs are influenced by his life’s work in science. Amidst evacuations and air raid sirens these two legendary scholars debate religion, sex, love, the existence of God, and the meaning of life itself.

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe

SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF INTELLIGENT LIFE ON THE UNIVERSE

Starring Michelle Douglas

Directed by Steven Feinstein

Michelle Joffe plays multiple roles in Jane Wagner's one-woman play, a comedic look at and critique of contemporary American society.

The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe takes up themes of the interconnectedness of people and of people’s methods for finding meaning in lives that sometimes seem absurd. Since the panoply of characters whose thoughts Trudy transmits exemplifies a range of race, class, and even gender, the play suggests that a common search for meaning links humanity at its core.

The play’s allusions to the performance of the play itself allow Jane Wagner to suggest that the ritual of attending and performing theatre creates a site for such linkages to occur. The play’s theatricality, and the fact that all of its characters are performed by the same actor, stresses universal human connections.

THE HOUSE OF TRUTH

by Siphiwo Mahala
Starring Sello Maake Ncube
Directed by Vanessa Cook

The House of Truth is a play by Siphiwo Mahala.  It premiered at the National Arts Festival in 2016 where it received rave reviews and opens at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square on the 31st October.

The play is about Daniel Canodoce “Can” Themba (21 June 1924 – 1968), a writer most famous for being the assistant editor of the Drum Magazine in the fifties and for writing The Suit, originally as a short story.   The play gives a considerable amount of detail about him, which is not surprising, because the playwright is currently pursuing doctoral studies on the life and works of Can Themba.  Virtually the only thing we don’t see is his early death in Swaziland, presumably from alcohol related health breakdown.

Directed by Vanessa Cook, The House of Truth stars Sello Maake kaNcube as Can Themba.

LIFE BEGINS - Riaad Moosa

21 - 22 April

Riaad Moosa is turning 40 so he invites the audience to join in figuring out whether life really does begin at 40.

BOOK NOW

They say “life begins at 40”…

Riaad Moosa invites the audience along to his brand new one-man show, Life Begins, to join in figuring out whether life really does begin at 40.  Due this past weekend’s sold out run, an extra two shows have been opened for Friday, 21 April and Saturday, 22 April at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square in Sandton.

Even though I am turning 40 this year, in many ways, I feel like I’m still crawling and I’m looking back at my journey from being an aspirational doctor, coming from a relatively conservative Muslim background, where both my parents were doctors, and how I actually journeyed to becoming a stand-up comedian,” says Riaad.

As an award-winning comedian, actor, writer and presenter, Riaad Moosa is one of South Africa’s most popular and acclaimed funny men and he happens to be a qualified medical doctor too.  Known as the “Comedy Doctor”, he certainly seems to have the remedy for the nation’s ills – a healthy dose of laughter, straight up – and hold the aspirin!

Life Begins is a snapshot into the life of Riaad Moosa – being a father of three kids, a husband, comedian, actor and with all the current cultural and political issues thrown in.

The show is very philosophical and existential.  It involves the normal issues of getting older while at the same time experiencing, at a maturity where I’m supposed to be wise, a world that is completely turned on its head – with Trump, with Brexit; In South Africa, the ‘State Capture’, ‘Fees Must Fall’, ‘DOOM’.  And it’s about how I negotiate all these things happening around me while trying to maintain a positive attitude.  Through my comedic lens, I hope to put a different spin on that and hopefully I can enter my next 40 years with renewed vigour and excitement,” Moosa adds.

Get your prescription of laughter with Riaad Moosa’s side-splittingly funny one-man show, Life Begins.

The show is rated PG for Language.  Tickets cost R200 and are now open at Computicket online and various outlet stores.
